Hypnotherapy - A complete Guide

You might be wonder ‘what the hell is hypnotherapy and how can it help me? Well here’s our mini guide to get you started. The best way to understand it and see what benefits it can bring to your life is to just have a go. So why not try it for free.

What is hypnotherapy?

Isn’t it some sort of woo-woo bullsh*t, the preserve of magicians and new-age hippies? Well, we specialise in cognitive hypnotherapy. It is a style of talk therapy that draws on a modern understanding of ‘trance’ to enable a person to let go of what restricts them and strengthen what empowers them.

Informed by evolutionary psychology, positive psychology and cognitive theory, we use elements from a broad range of therapeutic styles including neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and gestalt therapy. Don’t worry, it’s not as lofty or wanky as it sounds... simply put, our guided hypnotherapy sessions are a two-way dialogue designed to help you shift your mindset from ‘I can’t’ to ‘I can’.

The brilliant thing with hypnotherapy is that there's absolutely no pressure. We use the music and the soothing voice of our therapists to lull you into a sense of calm, a sense of relaxation, that will help you drift into a state of hypnosis, or a hypnotic state.

Which, by the way, is not a really scary thing. It happens everyday to people. It's really natural. So you think about when you're brushing your teeth, you're on autopilot. Or perhaps you're on your commute. You don't even think about what you're doing. That means you're in a hypnotic state. These are really, really natural states that we come in and out of every day. It's when you're in these moments that your brain, your mind, becomes way more suggestible.

How does Hypnotherapy work?

What we do is we help you to recreate these hypnotic states. And it's in these moments that we start helping you to turn all of those negative, you know little niggly feelings going on inside your head into more positive and more empowering thought patterns.

We use cognitive hypnotherapy and what’s so powerful about it is that it blends other therapies together like CBT, NLP, traditional coaching and also the hypnotherapy, which means that we focus on all of you what works best depending on where you need help the most. It's really, really powerful.

Online Hypnotherapy

So you might be thinking, does hypnotherapy work when I get it from an app. Well it’s a slightly different experience to seeing a therapist in person but it is still brilliantly effective and comes with a much smaller price tag. We’ve created the sessions based on what thousands of women have told us they struggle with so they are all build with you in mind.

Does Hypnotherapy work?

We wholeheartedly believe that hypnotherapy is more powerful for women who have busy brains who want to shift their mindsets from negative to positive.

Our approach doesn’t just focus on the end goals, such as “I am confident”. For some people, this works. But many of us resist this kind of change, it’s too far away from how we currently feel. To get things moving, we need to bridge the gap first.

For example, if someone says ‘Let’s go to Paris’, we don’t magically arrive in Paris. We have to buy tickets, pack , catch the train etc... Similarly, if you would like to believe that you’re “confident”, we’ll start by teaching you how to identify the particular thoughts, feelings, choices and habits that would support that. This process is extremely empowering because it not only opens your eyes to a new kind of life, but also gives you a road map to get there.

Hypnotherapy myth-busting

Myth 1: Not everyone is suggestible

‘I’m not suggestible. My mental fortresses are so strong even Derren Brown won’t be able to breach them.’ Sorry to burst your bubble but by our definition, we’re all suggestible. It’s a bit like finding yourself humming a tune only to realise you’d just heard it on the radio.

From waking up in the morning, scrolling through social media, daydreaming or drifting off to sleep at night, we all experience moments when we’re on ‘auto-pilot’ and in a state of trance.

There’s nowhere to hide... but that could be a good thing! It is in these unguarded moments that we are open to absorbing suggestions. It is how our brains learn. When our mind is relaxed, we can rewire our thought patterns, shifting negative thoughts into positive ones.

Myth 2: Hypnotism makes you lose control

Many people associate hypnotherapy with a loss of control, they fear the therapist will hijack their mind and make them say or do things they wouldn’t choose for themselves. This is complete and utter bollocks. No hypnotherapist has that kind of power. If a suggestion doesn’t make sense to a client’s mind or if it’s not something they agree with, it’ll be rejected. So fear not, nobody can make you cluck like a chicken!

Therapists must be highly skilled to help people make fundamental changes, even in ways they’d like. Before someone with anxiety will be ready to accept the suggestion that they can be calm, the scene must be set and the foundations laid in a way that makes the idea of calm feel within reach. This is where Clementine’s coaching + hypnotherapy program can help.

Benefits of Hypnotherapy

There are loads of benefits you’ll feel from hypnotherapy, from getting better sleep, reducing stress and generally feeling more confident and capable. We help to shift your mindset interrupting negative thoughts, replacing them with empowering ones. The big thing to remember is once you start to see improvements, don't stop, keep going. This is really, really important. It's the repetition that will really help lead to long term change.

Hypnotherapy For Sleep

Improving your sleep can make a WORLD of difference to how you feel in your day and managing your stress levels. Getting a good night’s sleep can be a tricky business at times. We all seem to struggle in different ways, whether it’s shutting off your inner brain chatter and letting go of the day or that 4am wide awake – “Ahhh how the hell am I going to get back-to-sleep?!?”

The good news is hypnotherapy is amazing for sleep and we’ve created a range of sessions to help in those moments. They are brilliant and really work to help you drift off.

Hypnotherapy For Anxiety

Stress and anxiety can be a b*tch and really get in your way. Rather than trying to suddenly become calm, it’s all about small steps to see improvements. One of the brilliant tools we have in the app is The Become a Calmer Person course which is designed to go more in-depth and you’ll have a handy little calm kit at the end. It combine coaching and hypnotherapy to help you feel less stressed and more in control.

Hypnotherapy for Confidence

We’re all brilliant and it’s about bloody time we realised it! To help you feel a bit more ‘YES I F*CKING CAN!!’ we’ve got a range sessions that’ll help you remember just how capable you are and to ditch self doubt.

Hypnotherapy For Weight Loss

A few people ask us about helping with this and we really believe that the best place to start is body acceptance and starting to feel better about your body. Then once you’ve created a better relationship with how you think about it, it makes it easier to make healthier and better choices. We’re working on a Become More Body Confident course and will be adding this to the app soon.

Hypnotherapy For Smoking

This has always been a popular thing to use hypnotherapy for. It’s not something that we have sessions for at the moment but what we can do is help you to feel calmer and more in control so you don’t need to reach for a cigarette when you’re trying to quit.
