Cognitive hypnotherapy mindset transformation

Cognitive hypnotherapy can transform your mindset by helping you to reclaim thoughts and feelings so that they work with you, rather than against you. But how does it work exactly?

A new approach in the wellbeing space

Cognitive Hypnotherapy is a type of talking therapy like counselling and CBT. It’s a powerful new approach in the mental wellbeing space that combines effective techniques from different therapy styles including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Positive Psychology, traditional hypnotherapy, Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) and Gestalt therapy.

Combining these approaches, Cognitive Hypnotherapy is able to work with the mind at a conscious and an unconscious level to make lasting positive changes to problematic thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

Cognitive hypnotherapy audio recordings

Cognitive hypnotherapy is traditionally accessed by visiting a cognitive hypnotherapist. The therapist works with their client in face-to-face sessions to address thoughts, feelings and/or behaviours that they’re struggling with.

They also give their client a hypnotherapy audio recording to listen to between appointments. This audio recording contains trance-inducing suggestions and visualisations to help you process and integrate new perspectives and ideas.

Clementine makes this cognitive hypnotherapy style of therapy more accessible and affordable by recreating one of the most important parts of visiting the therapist; the therapy audio recordings.

Clementine therapy sessions are written and recorded for our listeners by qualified and practising hypnotherapists. The sessions address a wide range of common issues with plans to expand and cover more categories for our listeners.

How cognitive hypnotherapy works

Hypnotherapy teaches your mind to see things differently. It can help you to see a problem from a new angle or to view yourself in a new light. It does this by:

Preparing your mind to learn

We do this by helping you enter a natural state of hypnosis. In a hypnotic state your mind is relaxed, calm and more suggestible; perfect for learning new empowering thought patterns, ideas and perspectives.

Delivering positive messages

Once in a relaxed state, the therapist interrupts negative thoughts by delivering positive messages that can help transform how you think and feel in whatever area you have chosen to work on or improve.

The therapist uses language that talks to both your conscious and unconscious mind. Your unconscious mind works in the abstract and responds to imagery, metaphor and symbolism. Your conscious mind needs to make sense of things and maintain control and so responds to logic and reasoning.

Repeating them so the message sticks

The positive suggestions are repeated throughout the session. This reinforces the learning and helps the messages stick. The more you think a thought, the stronger that neural pathway becomes meaning that it is easier to recall and bring to mind next time. By repeating positive suggestions, you create and strengthen more healthy thought processes, until they become habitual.

What cognitive hypnotherapy can help with

Cognitive hypnotherapy can be used to address most common emotional, mental or behavioural issues including anxiety, low self-esteem/lack of confidence, imposter syndrome, stress and poor sleep.

It can alleviate specific physical challenges such as sleeplessness, migraines and some hormonal changes in our bodies like having period cramps or hot flushes.

It can also help in areas of your life that you want to improve in, for instance, becoming more confident, more productive, more patient, more grateful, more considerate.

It can be used to break down bad habits that may be holding you back or unpick limiting beliefs that stop you doing the things you want, like “I’m not good enough to do…” or “I can’t because...” or “I’m too old.”

The great thing about hypnotherapy is that there's absolutely no pressure. We use the music and the soothing voice of our therapists to lull you into a sense of calm, a sense of relaxation, that will help you drift into a state of hypnosis. It can be easier to practise than mindfulness meditation.

The big thing to remember is once you start to see improvements, don't stop, keep going. This is really, really important. It's the repetition that will really help lead to long-term change.

Hypnotic states; a natural state of mind

Hypnotic states are completely natural. It’s a state of mind that we all pass through naturally many times a day. Most of us recognise it as being in a ‘trance like’ state where we do things automatically, like we’re on autopilot.

Whenever you’re on autopilot; you’re in a state of hypnosis. You might recognise moments when you’ve been in this state, for instance;

Automatically brushing your teeth when you’re still half asleep;

arriving home but not recalling the walk back;

or when you find yourself staring through someone for a while without realising,

This trace-like autopilot can also appear in moments of focus; like when you’re so fully absorbed in a conversation, movie or book that the rest of the world fades away. Or when an athlete is in flow and they don’t need to consciously think to swing the tennis racket or throw a punch; it’s their unconscious mind that is calling the shots.

Our Clementine sessions recreate that hypnotic, trance-like mindset by using the guiding voice of the therapist, saying the right words, in the right way, at the right time.

The science behind Cognitive Hypnotherapy

Cognitive Hypnotherapy is a modern approach that combines some of the most powerful techniques and theories from different therapy styles. These include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Positive Psychology, traditional hypnotherapy and NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming).

It uses the practical, cognitive tools from CBT and Positive Psychology to help you take conscious control of negative thoughts, and then uses the more creative, imaginative and engaging elements of hypnotherapy and NLP to help you to rewire your unconscious perspective and assumptions.

Together, it helps you rewrite the stories you live by so you can swap out limiting beliefs and recurring problems in favour of a healthier self-image and view on life.

Evidence that it works

The research

In 2011, the Quest Institute of Cognitive Hypnotherapy launched a research project with the aim of demonstrating the efficacy of their approach. The study used the same outcome measures as IAPT[PI1] (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies), which meant that they could compare their practice directly with the leading therapeutic models within the National Health Service such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

In September 2015, the pilot study was published in the Mental Health Review Journal. Using 118 cases of people suffering from depression and/or anxiety symptoms, it recorded that 71% of those included in the study considered themselves recovered after an average of four sessions. This compared to an average of 42% for other approaches like CBT that have used the same measures.

98% of people say our sessions help!

We’ve created the sessions based on what thousands of women have told us they struggle with so they are all built with you in mind. Our community can rate every audio session after listening and so far the results are clear - 98% of 18,000 listeners who have rated our sessions say that they have helped!

Hypnotherapy myth busting

Myth 1: Not everyone is suggestible

We’re all suggestible. Have you ever found yourself humming a tune only to realise you’d just heard it on the radio? Thought so.

From waking up in the morning, scrolling through social media, daydreaming or drifting off to sleep at night, we all experience moments when we’re on ‘auto-pilot’ and in a state of trance.

There’s nowhere to hide... but that could be a good thing! It is in these unguarded moments that we are open to absorbing suggestions. It is how our brains learn. When our mind is relaxed, we can rewire our thought patterns, shifting negative thoughts into positive ones.

Myth 2: Hypnotism makes you lose control

Many people associate hypnotherapy with a loss of control, they fear the therapist will hijack their mind and make them say or do things they wouldn’t choose for themselves. This isn’t true.. No hypnotherapist has that kind of power. If a suggestion doesn’t make sense to a client’s mind or if it’s not something they agree with, it’ll be rejected. So fear not, nobody can make you cluck like a chicken!

Therapists must be highly skilled to help people make fundamental changes, even in ways they’d like. Before someone with anxiety will be ready to accept the suggestion that they can be calm, the scene must be set and the foundations laid in a way that makes the idea of calm feel within reach. This is where Clementine’s coaching and hypnotherapy can help.

Hypnotherapy for sleep

Improving your sleep can make a world of difference to how you feel in your day and managing your stress levels. Getting a good night’s sleep can be a tricky business at times. We all seem to struggle in different ways, whether it’s shutting off your inner brain chatter and letting go of the day or that 4am wide awake – “Ahhh how the hell am I going to get back-to-sleep?!?”

The good news is hypnotherapy is amazing for sleep and we’ve created a range of sessions to help in those moments. They are brilliant and really work to help you drift off.

Hypnotherapy for anxiety

Stress and anxiety can really get in your way. Rather than trying to suddenly become calm, it’s all about small steps to see improvements. One of the brilliant tools we have in the app is The Become a Calmer Person course which is designed to go more in-depth and provide you with a handy little calm toolkit at the end. It combines coaching and hypnotherapy to help you feel less stressed and more in control.

Our course; Become more comfortable in your body aims to help you feel more comfortable in your own skin and gives you the tools to stop body worries impacting your life.

Hypnotherapy for smoking

This has always been a popular thing to use hypnotherapy for. It’s not something that we have sessions for at the moment but what we can do is help you to feel calmer and more in control so you don’t need to reach for a cigarette when you’re trying to quit.

Cognitive hypnotherapy can help with so many common emotional, mental and behavioural problems. We have cognitive hypnotherapy audio sessions for anger, energy, confidence, productivity, work, menopause, self-belief, better mornings, better sleep and much more.
